Church Life

Carl Bartlett Appreciation Sunday

(January 15, 2006) The congregation celebrated the accomplishments of an extraordinary member of our church, Carl Bartlett, on this January Sunday. Carl has brought and continues to bring many personal talents to the Church on the Cape. His trombone has enhanced many of our services. His leadership, particularly on the Board of Trustees, has kept our physical plant in tip-top condition. And his leadership skills have consistently kept us focused on achievable goals.

Carl remembers the 'bad old days' when skunks and raccoons shared our structure with a handful of dedicated members. It was then that he convinced retired pastor Sherwood Treadwell to sign on as our part-time pastor...just to see if new life could be brought to a dying church. Carl's intervention allowed Sherwood to do his magic and our success today is directly a result of that earlier decision.

Carl convinced many members and friends of our church to become 'organ donors' as we replaced our aging electronic organ with a spectacular new digital instrument, enhanced with two ranks of pipes. Our organ concerts have been immensely successful. Who can leave without contributing to the free-will offering after Carl reminds them, "Getting into this concert was free, but getting out is another matter."

At the celebration, Carl's grandson Justin played Chopin and during the service, performed on the Sousaphone. Carl's understated comment, "He plays pretty good." reflects immense pride in Justin's musical accomplishments.

With Lillian at his side, Carl was awarded "Trustee Emeritus" status by the Board and a plaque expressing the appreciation of the church family for his abundant good works.  These were honors richly deserved.
