The Annual Charge Conference at the Church on the Cape
by Drusilla Landry

( January 30, 2000) The Superintendent of the Southern Maine District, the Rev. Donald Rudalevige, presided at the conference which began following the 10 a.m. worship service.

Our pastor, the Rev. Jo Bennett, summarized the physical and spiritual growth of the church in 1999: There were 15 baptisms, 33 new members received, 7 weddings and 14 funerals performed - thus making us one of the fastest growing "small" churches in New England.

Rev. Jo spoke of adding variety to the worship service. She called for patience and understanding by both the new ministers and the congregation. She reported that 230 people joyously attended Christmas Eve Services.

Bob Towne, who heads Christian Education, spoke of how the Sunday School is growing by participating in church and community activities. Their carol singing in the village for shut-ins was much appreciated by residents and carolers. The Youth Group is still in limbo, he lamented, but definitely not forgotten. It was suggested that Goat Island Light be used as a site for next summer's proposed Bible School.

Rev. Bennett added that she hears that the church itself is reaching out warmly to visitors and is perceived to be "welcoming and non-judgmental." Other speakers commented that Rev. Jo is generating lots of energy to foster growth and personally coaxing members to participate gladly.

Our Pastor Emeritus, Sherwood Treadwell, told us he was personally convinced that the Holy Spirit was responsible for Jo coming to our church.

A new worship committee has been formed to field complaints as well as praise for the new minister and to see that the altar is ready for the rituals of the day.

The congregation has undertaken the challenge of a budget $22,000 over last year's with faith, hope and confidence, and is already ahead of schedule. The church continues to be a valid community church welcoming newcomers and serving the needs of one and all.

Following the meeting, a luncheon was enjoyed in the parlor consisting of fish chowder, salad, sandwiches, and yummy desserts. Our thanks to the Hospitality Committee, Dick Ackley, Melinda Caron and David Doubleday whose extra work made this luncheon particularly tasty and enjoyable.
