Reconditioning the Sanctuary Floor

(Sunday, October 14, 2001) Following the Sunday service, the sanctuary did not return to its usual restful ambiance. There was a burst of activity to prepare the floor for a week of sanding and refinishing ahead.

In the above picture, you can count at least 30 people who participated in the Moving of the Pews Ceremony. Eager, strong and helpful hands had all of the pews moved into the parlor in less than an hour.

Carl Bartlett, our shop steward, had us so well organized that this "moving" experience went off without a hitch. Particularly impressive were the customized dollies built just for the event by Leon Lovejoy. Credit goes to Carl Bartllet and Dave Sutter for putting their heads together with Leon. Add to that list of organizers, David Emery and Jim Lennon, who early on mapped out the process of the move.

During the week, amid the noise of sanding, the clouds of wood dust , and the "aroma" of polyurethane, four coats of finish were applied. The floor hasn't looked this good since the 19th century!

Saturday morning at 8:15, thirty men and women reinstalled the pews. The moving, sanding, finishing, replacement of some flooring and the reinstallation went like clockwork. Even the chandeliers were dusted. The pews were back within 45 minutes and the sanctuary returned to its original condition within another 30 minutes. Many thanks to Carl's vision and the dedication of a fine group of workers.
