Laity Sunday 2001 Laity Sunday, 2001 The mission of the Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ by reaching out and receiving people into the Body of Christ; leading persons to commit their lives to God through Jesus Christ; to nurture people in Christian living; to send these people into the world to faithfully live out their discipleship; and to see that these steps continue to happen to people in our community.
This year marked the sixth year that our Associate Lay Leader, Roy Bruton, organized the Order of Worship and recruited the laity who participated in this service. Those members of our church who participated were as follows: George Cushman offered the Words of Welcome; Elaine Triplett spoke of the meaning of Laity Sunday; Marty McGannon led the Children's Time with a discussion about "helping"; Tom Marshall led the congregation responsively in Psalm 100, "Worship the Lord with gladness…", and also read the scripture lesson from Job 1: 13-22. Elaine Triplett and Bob McLaughlin spoke about stewardship as part of the prelude to our pledge campaign; Roy Bruton received the offering. Alice Bruton read the sermon, "A Question of Job". This sermon was written by Ziegler Award Recipient, Rev. Anne Robertson and led us to ponder the question "why are good people good?" rather than "why do good people suffer?". Job was one of God's most faithful servants, never losing his faith in all his adversity. Alice suggested that as the laity of the Church on the Cape we should live our faith so that everyone who enters here will feel that God is in this place and we will truly be "partners in ministry".
