The Church on the Cape takes its outreach efforts seriously, expanding its involvement in areas where time, talent and treasure can be most effective. Our activities include but are not limited to the following efforts:
Food Pantry: Our church has two representatives on this food resource committee in the Kennebunks. You can contact Lillian Barlett or Harriett Eaton for more information. Bon Appetite: This program serves meals at the Second Congregational Church in Biddeford. Our church provides the servers and cleanup staff on the third Wednesday of each month. Diane Connolly is the chair of this active group of volunteers. Caring Unlimited: Domestic violence is the most recurrent incident reported to the police in Kennebunkport, according to Police Chief Joe Bruni. Caring Unlimited offers hope to families in danger through a 24-hour hotline staffed by legal advisors and support personnel. Kennebunkport Public Health Emergency Fuel Assistance Program: This program is designed to help those who are having difficulty meeting the increased cost of winter heating fuel. This assistance is funded entirely through donations. York County Shelters: This is a program committed to end homelessness and assist people to reach their fullest potential by providing access to various levels of housing, personal growth opportunities and community resources. Senior Luncheon: Once a year, the church presents a Senior Luncheon . It has become a wonderful time of renewal for members and friends of the church. The food is always fine and there is usually a rousing round of old time hymns. Habitat for Humanity: Habitat is well-known for bringing the building talents of volunteers, including former president Jimmy Carter, to the issue of affordable housing. We are supporting the York County Chapter as volunteers from our church have added their names to the list of "contractors." Rich Parsons is our contact.
Downeast Maine Missions: This effort supports some 10,000 migrant workers in Washington County, Maine. We provide blankets, clothing, personal hygiene kits, money and regularly send a group of volunteers to participate in the ministry. Bill Lord is our contact. The Cargo Shop is managed by a devoted committee of volunteers, It offers clothing, shoes, housewares, books and knick knacks of all types. It is a community service of our Outreach Committee. Regular hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2p-4p. During the summer, the shop is also open on Saturdays from 10-12 noon. People who wish to donate items can leave them outside the church office. Many thanks to the community for their continued support. Partner in Development: This Christian service organization has been working to improve conditions for the most desperate poor in Haiti and Guatemala. Each year, several volunteers from our church visit these missions. Princess Basma Hospital for Disabled Children: This Palestinian hospital in Jerusalem provides medical help to children injured in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Under the direction of Pastor Emeritus Sherwood Treadwell, our church has given regularly to its needs. In recent years, the sale of Sherwood's book "A Flea Went to See in the Pod of a Pea" has generated substantial funds for this charity. Village Enterprise Fund: This is a micro-finance organization helping the poorest of the poor start this own businesses. The focus is on Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Alternative Christmas Fair: In December, there is an Alternative Christmas Fair. This event is a way to present members and friends with an alternative to material gift giving by supporting these much-needed programs. Funding: The church allocates a specific amount of our operating budget to outreach and in addition has annually set aside10% of its financial surplus for use by the Outreach Committee.
