The First Annual Church Picnic on Goat Island

July 22, 2001 - (Goat Island) Approximately seventy members and friends of the Church on the Cape gathered for our first church picnic on Goat Island. The island and its lighthouse, now owned by the Kennebunkport Land Trust, protects the entrance to Cape Porpoise Harbor. The light itself is still maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as an important aid to navigation.

The highlight of the day, aside from the super food, great conversation and picnic atmosphere, was the "summiting" of the lighthouse by Monica Lyons, Sherwood Treadwell, our Pastor Emeritus and his wife Nancy. They successfully navigated the circular stairs to the top, beaming brightly with justifiable pride. Canes be darned, a determined Maine Methodist can accomplishment anything!

Our thanks to Tom Bradbury and the PPRC, as well as the transportation flotilla, for making a spectacular day possible. No one got wet and thanks to the cooperating tide, a good three hours was available for the event.
