Pastor Ruth Receives York County Starfish Award from United Way

"Surprise!"

That was the greeting Pastor Ruth received from nearly 40 friends and parishioners when she entered the Goose Rocks Fire Department last night. She thought she was coming to bless a new fire boat, but instead she received a blessing - the Starfish Award from the United Way of York County, the Kennebunk Savings Bank and the York County Coast Star.

One morning, after a stormy night, a grandparent and a small child were walking along the beach. The child ran ahead and the elder watched as the tiny figure stopped and started tossing something into the ocean.

As the grandparent drew closer to the child, it was evident that thousands of starfish had washed up on the beach. The grandparent asked, "What are you doing?"

The youngster replied, "If I leave the starfish on the beach, they will die."

The grandparent speaking from years of experience said, "There are thousands of starfish here. Do you really think you can make a difference to all these starfish?"

The child reached down, picked up another starfish, and tossing it back into the ocean said, "To that starfish, I made a difference."
